Tasting Notes
Koppitsch 2018 Ret Red
Tasting Notes
This woodsy and wild red from Austria is what I suspect it’d be like to gnaw on the most delicious, Michelin-starred tree branch in all the land - only without splinters or buglets (my word for small bugs). Bone-dry, with a smoky, mushroom-y, umami thing going on that would make a big, dripping cheeseburger drop its panties. That said, this wine is pretty weird. There’s a sizable quantity of earthy funk, but also a full juiciness that can only be reminiscent of the lunchbox days chewing stewed raspberry fruit leather at recess. Bring this one camping and save for the chilliest night by the fire, where it’ll blend in seamlessly with flame-grilled veggie dogs, a pile of singed s’mores, and thick swirling smoke. You know, the kind that makes your hair smell like soot even after three shampoos.
Pair With:
Anything you might see in a lumberjack’s diet - burgers, beef jerky, a cereal bowl of wood chips, etc.
Funk-o-Meter
It’ll have your pinkies-up, Chateau St. Michele-worshipping friends describing it as “unique” after the first sip, and “sensational” after the thirteenth.
