Tasting Notes

I remember the very first time I ate mango. Please, join me for this memory. The setting: New York City, 2013. I was working on the crew for America’s Got Talent. My job involved ordering $300 steaks for Jason Derulo and humble BMT sandwiches for Josh Groban (who actually offered to come with me to Subway, to which I replied, “Josh Groban, no!”). It also involved crushing the dreams of little girls in the audience by breaking the news that One Direction’s segment was pre-taped three days prior. I’ll never forget the pure terror that coursed through my fragile post-grad veins as one of their mothers demanded, with fiery infernos for eyes, “What do you MEAN Harry’s not here?!” Yikes. Anyway, I digress. There was always a tray of cut fruit at craft services, and I became so obsessed with mango that I’d arrive at Radio City Music Hall early every day to make myself a plate piled high for breakfast, leaving absolutely none for anybody else. It was very rude of me in hindsight. Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. This orange Chardonnay tastes like a big ol’ mouthful of mango slices and not much else. That’s really all you need to know.

Pair With:

A tuna poke bowl drizzled with sesame oil, fish sauce-coated chicken wings, or “The Best Song Ever” by One Direction (in honor of all the heartbroken pre-teens that fateful day).

Funk-o-Meter

There’s a smidgen, but it’s masked by honeyed tropical fruitzies and a bitter bite. P.S. my Google Docs didn’t underline “fruitzies” in red, so I declare it a real word now.
